Assistant Professor English Literature - Renaissance Literature and Culture

The successful candidate will have a broad background and teaching interests in English literature, with specialization in Renaissance literature and culture. Further expertise in eighteenth-century literature or literary theory is also desirable. An active research programme is essential, and the successful candidate will possess demonstrated potential to publish research of international standing. The language of instruction for all English literature courses is English.

Tasks

teaching and developing teaching activities both as part of and outside the programme of English;
(co-)supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses;
independently conducting research in the area mentioned, resulting in contributions to leading international publications;
co-supervising PhD candidates;
making a contribution to raising contract and indirect funding.

Requirements

relevant PhD degree;
experience in research and excellent research skills, evidenced by publications in renowned international professional journals / book form;
teaching experience at the university level and demonstrable didactic abilities and / or training, evidence by an educational portfolio;
experience with digital and audio-visual equipment; affinity with ICT in academic education;
team spirit and capable of functioning at all levels of more than one study programme;
willingness to develop in a multidisciplinary capacity in order to be able to participate in multiple areas of the Faculty’s curriculum;
organisational experience and skills;
thorough knowledge of Dutch and English; non-native Dutch speakers must achieve fluency in Dutch within two years.

Appointment
As a result of the Faculty policy pertaining to the flexibilisation of its workforce, this vacancy has been marked as a ‘transfer position’. Transfer positions are only part-time. This means that when a staff member is employed in a transfer position, he/she will not be given a permanent contract and will be required to transfer to a new position within the UvA when the period of employment formally ends. If no alternative position is available at the University, termination of employment will follow. In such cases, the University will provide the necessary support.

The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of no more than two years. Subject to satisfactory performance the appointment will be extended with an additional three years maximum. The gross monthly salary will range from €3,195 (scale 11) - €4,970 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).

About the Post

The applicant should have strong and established record of research and academic leadership who would play an active part in continuing and developing the Department's international reputation for innovation in the field of Renaissance and Early Modern Studies.

Responsibilities

The post-holder will be required to contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment of student achievements and research whilst being able to make significant contribution to the field of Renaissance studies. The ideal candidate will also be required to contribute to the design of new courses or options, to research towards the advancement of the subject, to show promise of continuing development as a scholar, and to perform administrative duties allocated to an acceptable standard.

The Individual

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree or equivalent coupled with a postgraduate degree in relevant subject or equivalent. Candidates should also have relevant experience of undergraduate teaching as well as demonstrable experience in research with appropriate publication records and evidence of ongoing research activity at a high level. The Ideal candidate should be able to teach at any level within area of expertise, and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level and demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in the process of teaching whilst being able to play a role, both singly and collaboratively, in applying for grant funding for research as appropriate to discipline.

Remuneration and Benefits

The post is full time and permanent. Starting salary will be in the range £37,819 - £47,088 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

The Department of History seeks to appoint an Assistant or Associate Professor in Early Modern British History. You will conduct research in Early Modern British History, and work in collaboration with colleagues within the department, and across the University. You will be expected to build research networks in your specialism beyond the University.

As an Assistant Professor you will have a proven record of achievement in research, with clear potential for/or demonstrated excellence in publication in an area or areas of Early Modern British History. You will have undergraduate teaching experience, and experience of/or the potential to engage in postgraduate teaching. You will have knowledge of applying for funding, and the potential to participate in collaborative grant initiatives and management. You will be expected to participate as appropriate in the administration of the History Department.

As an Associate Professor you will have a proven record of achievement in research, and have demonstrated excellence in publication in an area or areas of Early Modern British History. You will have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience, a track record of successful funding bids, experience of, or potential to participate in collaborative grant initiatives and management, and the ability to participate as appropriate in the administration of the History Department.

Lecturer A in Renaissance Theatre and Drama

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer in English Renaissance Theatre and Drama to join the Renaissance team in the Department of English and Humanities at Birkbeck. The successful candidate will be involved in our lively research community and will make a full contribution to the Department’s international research profile.

The postholder will have the opportunity to shape teaching and research in the field of Renaissance Studies, playing a key role in developing BA and MA teaching and supervising at doctoral level. They will have research interests in Renaissance Theatre and Drama and will teach Renaissance Theatre and Drama; Shakespeare in context and in performance; Renaissance Literature and Culture. They will contribute to BA English; BA Theatre Studies; MA Renaissance and the MA in Shakespeare and Performance.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will participate in the Department’s vibrant research culture. The department is the base for numerous research activities, including regular Theatre and Renaissance Seminars which host speakers and give staff a chance to present work in progress: Birkbeck Theatre Conversations; the Emphasis seminar in Intellectual History, the Material Texts Network; the London Renaissance Seminar, which hosts events exploring all aspects of early modern history, literature and culture. Candidates should have a good first degree and have ideally completed, or be near to completion of, a PhD in a relevant subject area, and show evidence of published research or exceptional potential. Teaching experience at postgraduate degree level is desirable.

Lecturer in Renaissance Literature
University of Hull - English Department

The University of Hull is seeking to appoint one or more suitably qualified individuals to provide teaching for and undertake assessment of a level 4 (first year) undergraduate module in Semester 2 (teaching starts on 30 January 2012) on Introduction to Renaissance Literature 1500-1675. The teaching is delivered in one-hour seminars each week. There are five seminar groups in total. Additionally, two office hours are provided each week for consultation.

This module to introduce students to the literature written during the English Renaissance, broadly 1500-1675, through the study of a variety of set texts, including Utopia, Doctor Faustus

The Tempest and Paradise Lost, Book IX.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in relevant literary studies, experience of teaching in a higher education environment, knowledge of the subject area and will be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Associate Research Fellow

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Andrew McRae. This AHRC-funded post is available on a fixed term basis from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2015. The successful applicant will support work on 'The Stuart Successions Project', assuming a central position within the project team. This project, for which the Co-Investigator is Dr. Paulina Kewes (University of Oxford), and which will also include two PhD students, aims to revitalize debates about political literature and values across the Stuart era by focusing on writing produced at moments of succession. It will produce an online database, cataloguing the field of succession literature, and generate a range of editorial and analytical work.

The post will include:

principal responsibility for compiling a database cataloguing items of 'succession literature' produced in response to the accession of each of the six Stuart monarchs (this work is expected to take c.50% of the appointee's time);
co-editing a volume of primary material;
writing a single-authored essay for publication in a co-edited volume of essays;
writing one co-authored journal article;
presenting work at conferences and colloquia;
organization of colloquia and public events;
management of the project website.

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (preferably, though not necessarily, in English), or have a doctorate close to completion, and be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to demonstrate bibliographical skills and high-level analytical skills. Experience in editing primary texts and/or language-skills (esp. Latin) would be an advantage.
